What To Do if You Suspect Fraud: Steps to Take Right Away

If something doesn’t look right on your account, don’t wait. Acting quickly can make all the difference in stopping fraud and recovering funds. Whether it’s an unfamiliar transaction, a suspicious call, or a lost card, follow these steps to protect your money and your identity.

1. Contact GBC Bank Immediately

Your first call should always be to us. Our fraud team can quickly freeze accounts, block suspicious charges, and help guide you through the next steps.

GBC Bank Fraud Assistance
(317) 462-1431
fraud@gbcbank.com
Available during business hours, with after-hours card support from 5pm to 11pm by calling (317) 462-1431.

If you think your debit or credit card has been compromised, log in to your GBC Bank mobile app or online banking to immediately lock your card. This stops new transactions while keeping recurring payments active.

2. Freeze or Stop Payments

The right response depends on the type of payment or transaction:

Debit or Credit Card:

  • Use the mobile app to lock your card right away.
  • Then call the bank to dispute unauthorized charges and request a replacement card.

ACH or Bank Withdrawal:

  • Contact us immediately to report unauthorized activity and request a reversal.
  • The sooner we know, the better the chance of recovery.

Paper Check:

  • If a check is lost or stolen, ask us to place a stop payment order.
  • Have your account number, check number, and amount handy.

Wire, Gift Card, or Cryptocurrency:

  • These payments are often irreversible, but contact us right away.
  • We’ll work with the receiving bank or company to attempt a recovery and help you report the incident.

3. Secure Your Information

Once the immediate threat is handled, take time to lock down your accounts and data:

  • Change your online banking and email passwords to strong, unique versions.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible.
  • If you shared personal identifiers (like your Social Security number), visit IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps and monitoring resources.

4. Report the Fraud to National Authorities

After you’ve contacted GBC Bank, it’s important to report the scam to help federal agencies investigate and track patterns:

  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC): ReportFraud.FTC.gov – for all types of scams.
  • FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): ic3.gov – for online fraud, including business email compromise.
  • AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline: 877-908-3360 – free, confidential support for victims and families.
  • FDIC Information & Support Center: 877-275-3342 – for bank-related complaints and consumer questions.

These agencies share reports with law enforcement nationwide, helping prevent others from becoming victims.

5. Stay Alert for Future Activity

Even after you’ve reported the fraud, stay proactive:

  • Review your accounts and credit reports regularly.
  • Set up account alerts for withdrawals, transfers, or large purchases.
  • Keep your contact information current with GBC Bank so we can reach you quickly if there’s a problem.
