In 1871, Ulysses S. Grant was president of the United States. With the Civil War only six years past, there were 37 states in the Union.

The transcontinental railroad had been completed; but the horse and buggy were still the accepted means of travel.

Greenfield, Indiana was a thriving town of over 1,000 people. The town needed a bank in order to continue to grow and progress. Five farsighted businessmen, Nelson Bradley, J. Ward Walker, Morgan Chandler, S.T. Dickerson and H.A. Swope, saw this need, and formed a stock company for the purpose of carrying on a banking business.

On September 4, 1871, the new bank opened its doors for business and the Greenfield Banking Company began its many years of uninterrupted service to the community.

Fast forward to today and you’ll see a wonderful community bank fully invested in the communities we serve. Greenfield, Fortville, Cumberland, McCordsville and New Palestine all have Greenfield Banking Company locations to serve their residents and businesses.

The bank’s headquarters, relocated in 1999 to its new location at the intersection of State Road 9 and New Road, house the corporate offices, the Main Branch Office and Wealth Management.  In 2015, our Indy North facility was opened to extend Wealth Management and Loan Production services.  GBC's Main Office, Downtown Office (formerly the Main Office) and the Meridian Road Office combined with the five offices outside of Greenfield make up the eight locations of Greenfield Banking Company.

For over 150 years Greenfield Banking Company has delivered high-quality financial solutions and personalized, friendly service. This service is fostered by a company culture of community involvement, support and volunteerism.

Our institution has provided financial support and employee volunteers to many organizations over the years. We support local school academic and sports programs, art & cultural organizations, our public library and our local hospital to name a few. Our employees are involved in many business, civic and service organizations. Partnering with the Greenfield Parks and Recreation, we sponsor free, professional concerts, open to all, on select Friday evenings in June, July and August held in downtown Greenfield at the Depot Street Park. Our list of community support and involvement is as long as our history and we are proud to live, work and serve in our communities.

As we continue in our next centennial of service, our strong, conservative principles will drive our success. Our sound lending practices, products and delivery channels will provide convenience, technology and secure banking.
